The best football players in the world ranked for 2026.
The debate over the best football player in the world has rarely been more difficult to settle. The 2025/26 season produced outstanding individual campaigns from Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and several others, while the 2026 FIFA World Cup added another major layer to the conversation.
This ranking considers the 2025/26 club season and the 2026 World Cup, with greater weight given to sustained performance, influence in major competitions, individual production, team success and performances on the biggest stages. It is an editorial ranking rather than an official FIFA or Ballon d’Or list.

Quick Answer: Top 10 Best Football Players in the World in 2026
| Rank | Player | Club | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Harry Kane | Bayern Munich | Striker |
| 2 | Lamine Yamal | Barcelona | Winger |
| 3 | Kylian Mbappé | Real Madrid | Forward |
| 4 | Michael Olise | Bayern Munich | Winger |
| 5 | Khvicha Kvaratskhelia | Paris Saint-Germain | Winger |
| 6 | Ousmane Dembélé | Paris Saint-Germain | Forward |
| 7 | Erling Haaland | Manchester City | Striker |
| 8 | Rodri | Manchester City | Midfielder |
| 9 | Vitinha | Paris Saint-Germain | Midfielder |
| 10 | Pau Cubarsí | Barcelona | Defender |
The order is debatable, particularly among the top five. Harry Kane’s extraordinary production gives him the edge at No. 1, while Yamal and Mbappé have perhaps the strongest arguments for challenging him.
1. Harry Kane
Harry Kane is our choice for the best football player in the world in 2026.
The Bayern Munich striker combined extraordinary scoring production with major domestic success and a strong Champions League campaign. UEFA recorded 14 goals in 13 Champions League appearances during the 2025/26 competition, while Kane scored in every knockout match he played.
Kane also finished the season with Bayern as Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal winner. His goalscoring remained the defining feature of his campaign, but his ability to contribute outside the penalty area makes him more than a conventional No. 9.
Kane’s prolific output continues a long tradition of elite strikers, a subject explored further in Who Has Scored the Most Goals in Football History?.
His World Cup campaign strengthened his case further. Kane scored six times for England as they reached third place, according to the end-of-season assessment from Flashscore.
There are legitimate arguments against putting Kane first, particularly because he did not produce his best performances in every decisive match. But when the entire season is considered, his combination of scoring, consistency and team success is difficult to surpass.
Why he ranks No. 1: Elite scoring output, Bundesliga and cup success, outstanding Champions League production and major international contribution.
2. Lamine Yamal
At only 19, Lamine Yamal has already moved into the very highest tier of world football.
His rapid rise also places him among the standout names in any discussion of Best Young Football Players Under 21 Right Now.
The Barcelona winger enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 LaLiga campaign, producing 16 goals and 11 assists in 28 league appearances as Barcelona won the title. Barcelona also notes that no player provided more LaLiga assists than Yamal during the season.
His Champions League numbers were equally impressive, with six goals and four assists in 10 appearances according to Flashscore’s season review.
Yamal’s importance is not limited to statistics. His ability to create advantages in one-on-one situations, generate chances and operate from the right side has made him one of Barcelona’s most influential attacking players.
He also finished the season with Spain as World Cup champions. His tournament was not as dominant individually as his club campaign, but winning the World Cup at 19 added another extraordinary achievement to his rapidly growing résumé.
Why he ranks No. 2: Exceptional club production, LaLiga Player of the Season recognition, creative influence and a World Cup-winning campaign.
3. Kylian Mbappé
Kylian Mbappé remains one of the most devastating attacking players in football.
His 2025/26 season was defined by goals. UEFA’s Champions League statistics list Mbappé as the competition’s leading scorer with 15 goals, while Flashscore’s season-end ranking credited him with 58 goals across all competitions.
Mbappé then produced an extraordinary World Cup, finishing as the tournament’s Golden Boot winner with 10 goals and four assists. FIFA’s official tournament statistics confirm those numbers.
That kind of tournament production also invites comparison with the broader list of FIFA World Cup Winners List: Every Champion Ranked.
That production makes Mbappé almost impossible to leave out of the top three.
The reason he does not rank first is largely team success. Real Madrid did not win a major trophy, while other candidates combined elite individual numbers with more significant silverware.
Even so, if the question is simply which players are capable of deciding matches through individual attacking quality, Mbappé remains near the top of the list.
Why he ranks No. 3: Exceptional goalscoring, Champions League scoring leadership and a World Cup Golden Boot.
4. Michael Olise
Michael Olise has made a significant jump into the world’s elite.
His first season at Bayern Munich produced outstanding creative numbers. Flashscore reports that Olise scored 15 Bundesliga goals and registered a league-high 19 assists in 32 appearances. He also contributed five goals and seven assists in 13 Champions League matches.
His influence continued internationally with France. Olise recorded seven assists at the 2026 World Cup, the most in a single tournament according to the season-end ranking.
His combination of creativity, chance creation and scoring makes him one of the most complete attacking players in this ranking.
The main reason he sits behind Kane, Yamal and Mbappé is that those players have a longer record of elite-level individual production. But based strictly on the 2025/26 campaign, Olise has an extremely strong case for being even higher.
Why he ranks No. 4: Elite creative output, Bundesliga Player of the Season recognition and an outstanding World Cup assist record.
5. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was one of the defining players of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions LeAs a central midfielder, his influence is reflected through control, positioning, passing and the ability to dictate the rhythm of matchesague triumph.
UEFA named the Georgian winger its 2025/26 Champions League Player of the Season after he scored 10 goals and supplied six assists in 16 appearances.
His decisive role in another European title for PSG sits within the wider history covered in UEFA Champions League Winners List (1956–2025): Every Champion, Final & Record.
His influence was particularly significant during the knockout stages. UEFA highlighted his performances against Bayern Munich and his contribution to PSG’s run to another European title.
Kvaratskhelia’s biggest disadvantage in this ranking is international football. Georgia did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup, meaning he lacked the opportunity to add a World Cup performance to his résumé.
That matters when comparing him with players who delivered at club and international level.
Still, winning Champions League Player of the Season is a powerful achievement and makes Kvaratskhelia an easy top-five selection.
Why he ranks No. 5: Champions League Player of the Season, 10 European goals, six assists and major influence in PSG’s title run.
6. Ousmane Dembélé
Ousmane Dembélé entered 2026 as the reigning Ballon d’Or winner and remained one of PSG’s most important attacking players.
He helped Paris Saint-Germain win another Champions League title and was included in UEFA’s official Team of the Season.
Dembélé also remained influential for France during the World Cup. FIFA’s tournament statistics list him with six goals and two assists.
His ranking at No. 6 reflects the strength of the competition rather than a lack of quality. He has the résumé to rank higher, but his overall 2025/26 campaign was less dominant than the players immediately above him.
The fact that he remains inside the world’s top six after such a competitive season underlines his status.
Why he ranks No. 6: Champions League winner, Ballon d’Or holder and major contributor for both PSG and France.
7. Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland remains one of football’s most dangerous goalscorers.
Manchester City’s striker finished the 2025/26 season with an enormous scoring total, while his seven World Cup goals helped Norway reach the quarter-finals. Flashscore credited Haaland with 58 goals for club and country across the campaign.
His Champions League production was also substantial, although his eight goals placed him behind Mbappé and Kane in the competition’s scoring chart.
Haaland’s position at No. 7 is therefore not a reflection of his goalscoring ability. It reflects the fact that several players above him combined comparable individual production with stronger performances in the biggest competitions and more significant team achievements.
Why he ranks No. 7: Extraordinary scoring numbers, FA Cup and Carabao Cup success and a strong World Cup campaign.
8. Rodri
Rodri’s place on this list is different from that of the forwards.
The Manchester City midfielder endured an inconsistent club season affected by injury, but his international campaign dramatically changed the conversation. Spain won the 2026 World Cup, and Rodri was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner.
His value is not captured simply by goals or assists. As a central midfielder, his influence is reflected through control, positioning, passing and the ability to dictate the rhythm of matches.
Rodri’s ability to control the tempo of major matches places him in the conversation with the names featured in Greatest Midfielders in Football History Ranked.
The weaker club campaign prevents him from ranking higher, but winning the World Cup’s Golden Ball is an enormous achievement and provides a compelling reason to include him among the world’s best.
Why he ranks No. 8: World Cup winner, Golden Ball recipient and one of the most influential midfielders of his generation.
9. Vitinha
Vitinha has developed into one of the most important midfielders at Paris Saint-Germain.
UEFA named him the Player of the Match in the 2026 Champions League final, praising his performance in midfield and his influence on the tempo of the game. He was also selected in UEFA’s Champions League Team of the Season.
His Champions League campaign included 13 appearances, while UEFA’s competition statistics also list him among PSG’s leading ball recoverers.
Vitinha’s value in progressive midfield play and recoveries also invites comparison with broader creative metrics tracked in Most Assists in Football History: All-Time Leaders Ranked.
Vitinha does not produce the headline goal totals of Kane or Mbappé, but that is not his role. His importance comes from controlling possession, progressing play and giving PSG stability in midfield.
Why he ranks No. 9: Champions League winner, final Player of the Match and an outstanding midfield campaign.
10. Pau Cubarsí
Pau Cubarsí completes the top 10 after an impressive season for Barcelona and an especially strong World Cup.
The young defender helped Barcelona win LaLiga before becoming an important part of Spain’s World Cup-winning defense. Flashscore’s final ranking notes that Spain conceded only one goal throughout the tournament and that Cubarsí was named the tournament’s best young player.
His inclusion also reflects something often overlooked in discussions about the world’s best players: elite defenders can have enormous influence without producing conventional attacking statistics.
Cubarsí’s composure in possession and defensive maturity have made him one of the most highly regarded young defenders in world football.
Why he ranks No. 10: LaLiga champion, World Cup winner and standout young defender at international level.
How the 2026 Ranking Was Decided
There is no universally accepted formula for determining the “best football player in the world.” Different awards and media rankings use different criteria.
For this list, the main factors were:
- Performance during the 2025/26 club season
- Champions League and other major competition performances
- Domestic league production
- International performance at the 2026 World Cup
- Individual awards and recognition
- Team success
- Overall influence rather than raw goals alone
- Consistency across the campaign
The World Cup was given significant weight because it is the biggest international tournament and directly affected the 2026 debate.
That methodology explains some differences between this ranking and other published lists. For example, the IFFHS 2025 world ranking had Ousmane Dembélé first, followed by Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane, while a separate season-long Flashscore ranking placed Kane first after combining club and country performances.
Neither system should be treated as the definitive answer. Player rankings are inherently subjective, especially when comparing different positions.
Who Could Have Made the Top 10?
Several elite players narrowly missed the list.
Players such as Lionel Messi, Raphinha, Pedri, Achraf Hakimi and Declan Rice all had credible cases based on different aspects of their seasons. UEFA’s Champions League Team of the Season included Hakimi and Rice, among others, demonstrating the breadth of competition for places among the world’s elite.
Messi deserves particular mention because his World Cup campaign was outstanding, but the weighting toward the full club-and-country season kept him outside this particular top 10.
That is also why these rankings should not be confused with an official award.

Final Thoughts
The 2026 list shows how difficult it has become to identify one undisputed best football player in the world.
Kane has the strongest overall statistical and trophy case, while Yamal combines elite production with remarkable age-related achievements. Mbappé remains the most obvious pure goalscoring superstar, Olise produced a phenomenal creative season, and Kvaratskhelia was arguably the standout player in Europe’s biggest club competition.
Behind them, Dembélé, Haaland, Rodri, Vitinha and Cubarsí demonstrate how different a player’s path to the top can be.
The next major chapter will be the 2026 Ballon d’Or race. With Kane, Yamal, Mbappé, Olise, Kvaratskhelia and others all having credible arguments, there is no shortage of competition for football’s most prestigious individual prize.
